First Place FireBird Book Award Winner!
October 20, 2022 – Speak Up Talk Radio announced the winners of the recent FIREBIRD BOOK AWARDS contest.
One of the winning entries was from California author Wendy Baker whose book titled My Name Was Mushroom: My Life as a Teenage Runaway in The Source Family Commune won in the Young Adult Nonfiction.
Authors and publishers from around the world submitted their work to the International Firebird Book Awards. All judges commit to a set of standardized criteria that evaluates the quality of the writing as well as production aspects. Only entries with the highest of scores are awarded the coveted Firebird.
The Firebird Book Awards run quarterly contests so authors can receive recognition on a timely basis. Authors from all genres, mainstream, independent, and self-published are welcome. For additional winning authors, titles, and entry information:

PRAISE FOR WENDY BAKER
"I literally could not put the book down. I read from beginning to end without a break."
— Robin Windham Amazon Review
"I finished the book in a day as I was not able to put it down. Beautifully written, I felt every emotion, triumph and struggle. Highly recommended!"

This story vividly captures the inner workings of a commune during the height of free love. I found it to be an exciting and disturbing ride through the eyes of a young girl being molded and shaped into a world one can only imagine if you've never experienced first hand. A very unique point of view.
— Garmento LLC
"Wendy had a harrowing experience being rejected by her mother, and at a tender age tried to navigate the temptations of the times till she found The Source Family. It's a pleasure to read about someone having a positive experience in a communal setting, instead of the shock and horror of abuse. She found her way with them and then took what she learned to move on in her life. A pleasant read of a time that will never be the same."
— Dawn. H. Amazon Review
"“My Name was Mushroom” is a personal depiction of 70’s California communal living. This book is a coming of age memoir that is hard to put down. A true page turner. I highly recommend this excellent read."
— Gigi Amazon Review
"As a kid who grew up in Hollywood in the 70’s, I can tell you Ms. Baker’s story truly captures that time. Her journey starting a young girl living in West Hollywood just starting middle school to her flight from home, to seeking the idyllic/peaceful and often chaotic life with the Source Family and beyond is nothing short of astonishing.
